EFFICIENT USE OF LAND

Compared to some of the largest sources of non-marine protein (pork, beef and lamb), farmed salmon is one of the most eco-efficient and sustainable forms of protein available.

Bakkafrost’s latest collaboration with FORKA Biogas Plant resulted in great success. In 2022, Bakkafrost’s recycled bio-waste provided 1,223 households with electricity, a total of 2.3% of the renewable electrical production of the Faroe Islands.

Bakkafrost is committed to demonstrating responsible leadership on industry issues and sustainability. We do this both at an international level through our contribution to initiatives such as the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), and at a local level through the Faroese Fish Farmer’s Association, the Scottish Salmon Producers Organization, Scotland Food & Drink and other industry groups

HEALTHY PEOPLE

As the biggest employer in the Faroe Islands, we are aware of our responsibility and motivated by our impact on local communities. We are very proud of our talented and diverse workforce, which consists of employees with different skills and different backgrounds.

HEALTHY SALMON

Bakkafrost has the market’s longest vertically integrated value chain located in a very small geographical area. The value chain extends throughout the farming process, from receiving fish, from MSC approved quotas, to the internal production of fishmeal and fish oil used for the specially in-house made feed. The raising process from roe to fully grown salmon takes almost 3 years.

HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

Continuous population growth makes preservation of Earth’s resources more important than ever. At Bakkafrost, eco-efficiency is at the heart of everything we do. We are the first in the industry to utilize bio-waste from hatcheries to energy production, currently providing about 1,900 households with electricity in the Faroe Islands.

Our goal is to see communities prosper from our activities, and we take a holistic approach regarding value generation. We support a wide range of causes with importance and impact on the communities in which we operate, and we aim to support causes that are aligned with the UN goals for sustainable development.
